Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Diese Karte sendet Ihnen mit Gruß [...]".
Specializing in marine painting, Petersen drafted his works during visits to the sea. In 1884 he was occupied as a draftsman for the "Illustrirte Zeitung" on the West African coast, and his works contributed to the German enthusiasm for the navy during the reign of German Emperor Wilhelm II.
A few small creases near right margin. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
