Inscribed to Cora Scharlau, a relative of the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Der beste Freund! Prost! [...]". With a pen and ink sketch of a wine glass.

Born into a Tyrolean family of artists, Pfretzschner worked in Berlin from 1891 to 1913, his controversial 1896 "Young Bismarck" monument at the Rudelsburg near Bad Kösen constituting his main work. He contributed to the Berlin "Siegesallee" project and authored popular hunting novels.

Postmark on verso showing through; a few small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
