Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "Es wird nur das gelten was Einer gekonnt hat, nicht was er gewollt hat. Das eben unterscheidet den Künstler vom Dilettanten [...]".

Beginning his studies in Königsberg in 1869, Räuber moved to Munich in 1872, applied himself to portraiture, landscape, genre and historical painting, and was awarded gold medals in Düsseldorf in 1880 and in Munich in 1883.

Traces of a fold near lower left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
