Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau.

Frequently cooperating with his brother Heinrich, Spieß created paintings, frescoes, woodcuts and illustrations. The brothers' main works include a watercolour cycle for the Wagner operas "Tristan and Isolde" and "The Flying Dutchman" for King Ludwig II of Bavaria, as well as 22 allegorical frescoes in the entrance hall of the Maximilianeum in Munich.

Traces of an angular and a vertical fold; traces of postmarks; small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.
