Garibaldi played an important role in the fight for Italian unification ("Risorgimento"), commanding and fighting in military campaigns in South Tyrol, Lombardy, Sicily, Southern Italy, Marche and Umbria. He is also known as the "Hero of the Two Worlds" for his contributions to the Ragamuffin War in Brazil (1835-45) and the Uruguayan Civil War (1839-51) during his 14 years of exile in South America. Today, Garibaldi remains a symbol for the fight for national independence and republican ideals all around the world as well as Italy's greatest national hero.
