Magnificent bull granting a provision to Charles de Martainville, abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery in Notre-Dame de L'Isle-Dieu in the diocese of Rouen, in recognition of Martainville's commendable work and in order to fill a vacancy. The bull invokes decisions made by previous Popes and by Kings of France concerning this monastery. It is beautifully decorated with two initials on the plica and several floral initials of the first line. Among the signatories of the Apostolic Chancery and Papal Curia is the young Bernardino Spada (1594-1661), who would later become Apostolic nuncio to France (1623-1627) and cardinal (from 1627). Beyond his long tenure as abbot from 1578 to 1624 (albeit in commendam until 1618), no biographical information is known regarding Charles de Martainville.

Mild abrasions. Well preserved.
