A complete Qur’an, executed in the Sudani style characteristic of Islamic manuscript production in West Africa. The writing is upright, angular, and spacious, with distinctive sublinear dots and elongated vertical strokes. Decoration employs mineral and plant-based pigments (ochre, red, green, white) without the use of gold, in keeping with regional practice. Marginal devices in roundel form mark textual divisions. The paper is imported European stock, as shown by the triple crescent watermark, attested in 18th-19th century Italian and French mills and widely exported to North and West Africa for Qur’anic manuscripts. The paper is well sized and relatively thick, exhibiting the typical unevenness of hand-laid sheets. The manuscript still preserves its original leather tie with attached cowrie shell, a feature strongly associated with devotional use and protective function in the wider Sahelian region.
