The present first issue of the series highlights the Emirates' role as a net energy exporter that exported an estimated 2.2 million barrels of oil per day in 1997, pointing out that "since 1973, the UAE has undergone a profound transformation from an impoverished region of small desert principalities to a modern state with a high standard of living". Still, the work maintains that this "high standard of living" comes iwth obstacles and drawbacks, such as a lack of natural freshwater resources, desertificiation and beach pollution from oil spills across the country.
