First edition, first issue of this annually-published review of the United Arab Emirates, discussing history, politics, economy, and business trends, as well as environmental issues. The present first issue of the series highlights the Emirates' role as a net energy exporter that exported an estimated 2.2 million barrels of oil per day in 1997, pointing out that "since 1973, the UAE has undergone a profound transformation from an impoverished region of small desert principalities to a modern state with a high standard of living". Still, the work maintains that this "high standard of living" comes iwth obstacles and drawbacks, such as a lack of natural freshwater resources, desertificiation and beach pollution from oil spills across the country.

With two maps of the Middle East and the Gulf, indicating all seven Emirates as well as islands off the coast of Abu Dhabi and a large portion of Qatar.
