First edition, very rare. Contemporary biography of Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, a renowned figure of 19th century travel literature on the Mediterranean, prepared by Pedro Bonet de los Herreros, Austrian vice consul in Palma de Mallorca. Signed and inscribed by the author on front cover to the Palma notary José Socias: "A mi distinguido y respetable amigo il Exc[elentisi]mo H. D. José Socias, en testimonio del afecto / Pedro Bonet de los Herreros".
Archduke Ludwig Salvator (1847-1915) spent much of his life in Mallorca, where in Valldemossa he acquired the residence Miramar in 1872. For decades, he travelled the Mediterranean aboard his famous steam-yacht "Nixe", publishing more than 50 ethnographical works on various then little-known islands in the Mediterranean. Starting in 1867, when Salvator first set foot in Palma, the present biographic account portrays the Archduke as a "constant benefactor of Mallorca", including a bibliography of his extensive literary oeuvre.
Very scarce, only two library copies traceable online, at the Paris Catholic Institute and the Barcelona Ateneu.
Removed from the collection of Elvir Sans (1896-1972), a prominent writer and historian of Palma de Mallorca, with his bookplate to front pastedown.
Wrappers a little spotted. Binding loosened at the beginning; half-title somewhat browned (offsetting from inside front cover vis-à-vis).
OCLC 913371118 and 1090833838. Not in Palau.
