Deluxe issue signed by Madame Chiang Kai-Shek
Sian: A Coup d'État. A Fortnight in Sian: Extracts From a Diary.
4to (185 x 247 mm). X, 119 pp. Publisher’s red patterned silk boards with gilt lettering on upper cover (a translation of the titles in Chiang Kai-shek's own calligraphy), decorated silk spine, string tied, double leaves in the Asian style.
First edition, deluxe issue ("printed on specially prepared Chinese paper made by hand from bamboo fiber"), signed by Madame Chiang Kai-shek on the interleaf between half-title and title-page. The publication contains Soong Mei-ling’s account of the Xi’an Incident of December 1936, together with translated extracts from Chiang Kai shek’s diary kept during his detention. Soong’s narrative traces the lead up to the seizure of Chiang by Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, her own interventions during negotiations, and the eventual formation of the Second United Front against Japan; the diary section supplies Chiang’s day by day perspective. Produced in Shanghai on handmade paper and issued in an elegant red silk binding, the volume reflects the Nationalist government’s careful presentation of the crisis and its resolution.
A contemporaneous primary source for one of Republican China’s pivotal political episodes, with strong association to the Generalissimo and Madame Chiang.
De luxe copy signed by Soong Mei ling (Madame Chiang Kai shek) on the front free endpaper, with her four character seal impression in red ink.
Silk binding bright; interior fresh with only light handling.
