A three-line Greek quotation from Demosthenes' famous oration "On the Crown": "It behoves the brave to set their hands to every noble enterprise, bearing before them the buckler of hope, and to endure gallantly whatever fate God may allot" (transl.).

On the reverse is an entry by the philosopher Samuel Christian Hollmann (1696-1787): a quotation from Seneca "Vita sine litteris mors est, et hominis vivi sepultura" (dated 13 May 1771).
