[Hinduism]. Illuminated Hinduistic manuscript.

India, early 19th century.

Oblong 12mo (137 x 75 mm). Sanskrit manuscript in black and red ink on paper. (349) pp. on 219 ff., six lines, set within multiple coloured ruled throughout. With 20 full-page miniatures. Modern red half cloth over marbled boards.

Charming manuscript of mythological Hindu texts centering on Vishnu and his avatars Rama and Kurma. The detailed and vividly coloured miniatures, each with their individual ornamental borders, include a depiction of the "Churning of the Ocean of Milk" involving Kurma and the fight of Rama and his brother Lakshmi against the ten-headed Ravana.

Some leaves brittle, affecting two of the miniatures. One miniature rather severely damaged and chafed. Several parts of the manuscript somewhat chafed, also affecting some of the painted borders.
