Inscribed to Adolf Sonnenthal

Schnitzler, Arthur. Alkandi's Lied. Dramatisches Gedicht in einem Aufzuge.

Vienna, Franz Suschitzky, 1890.

8vo (148 x 214 mm). 20 pp. Original printed wrappers.

 3,500.00

Only book publication of Schnitzler's second published play. Inscribed by the author to the famous Austrian actor Adolf Sonnenthal (1834-1909) on the title-page: "Herrn Adolf v. Sonnenthal / in ausgezeichneter Hochachtung / Arthur Schnitzler". Although Schnitzler wished to see this one-act verse drama staged, it never saw performance. Sonnenthal would later star in "Liebelei", the playwright's first success on the stage.

Separately published reprint from issues 17 and 18 of the journal "An der schönen blauen Donau", a literary entertainment magazine with a musical bent that catered to the Viennese middle class and published some of Schnitzler's early writing since 1889.

Extremely rare: only three copies recorded in research libraries internationally (DLA Marbach, BSB Munich, National Library of Israel); a single copy in auction records (2002, Bassenge 80, lot 4003: inscribed to a colleague, the Vienna dermatologist Eduard Schiff).

Condition

Traces of an old vertical fold. Paper brittle and browned, lower right corner a little chipped and stained. Wrappers somewhat dusty and brownstained; upper cover separating from the hinge.
