Magnificent Quran from the Qajar dynasty

[Quran]. Illuminated Quran manuscript.

[Prob. Persia], 1235 AH [1819/20 AD].

12mo (114 x 68 mm). Arabic ms. on smoothed paper. 201 unnumbered ff., 19 lines. Mit double-page list of suras on gilt background and two 'unwan in gilt and colours, floral borders in gilt and colours, and text borders raised in gilt throughout; sura headings in red ink on gilt-backed cartouches. Hizb, juz', and sajda markings in gilt and colours; gilt line divisions; gilt discs for verse divisions. Contemporary calf gilt on sides and with gouache paintings under vernis as well as paste-downs with gilt stamped flower illustrations.

Magnificent Quran from the Qajar dynasty, beautifully illuminated and in a very decorative binding. That this volume was created for a princely patron is evidenced not only by the delicate ornamental introductory pages with their double ornamental page of Shiite prayers (preceded by a list of suras), but also by the delicate borders of scroll-work applied throughout and the use of line divisions with gold leaf.

Covers show some wear and chipping to extremeties. First and final two leaves restored in the gutter or margin (some loss to ornamental border at the end). Introductory pages show ink corrosion along the border lines (minor loss of illustration). Waterstain to upper margin; some ornamental borders show occasional rubbing; small tears to margin towards the end. Slightly browned throughout but altogether very clean.
