Folio (266 x 388 mm). Single leaf woodcut with xylographic and typographic text, printed on one side only. 7 lines of text in type 3:92G, with large woodcut illustration (248 x 319 mm), coloured by a contemporary hand.

The only known contemporary impression of this large single-leaf woodcut and prayer sheet: an intercessory prayer to St. Jerome, who is depicted in his typical iconography as a hermit, kneeling in penance before a crucifix and holding a stone his hand to beat his bare chest. He is accompanied by his lion and cardinal's hat. A good impression of this extremely rare woodcut, printed strongly and clearly, with contemporary hand-colouring in green, ochre, brown and red, and the prayer in German "O Säliger und hoher lerer Jheronyme" in letterpress below, with margins on all sides.

The traces of glue on the verso suggest that it may have been pasted onto a wooden board, and may have survived as a binding pastedown. Although cut down in size above and below, the original woodblock has survived and is kept in the Derschau Collection at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin.

Provenance

From the collection of the Schindler family, possibly since the 19th century; possibly Dietrich Schindler (1795-1882), Zürich (see Lugt 793 & 4432; without mark).

Dr. Otto Schäfer (1912-2000), Schweinfurt (monogram stamp, not in Lugt). Christies, London, 2 July 2018, Lot 194. Christies Old Master Prints 29 Jan 2019, Lot 2.

Condition

Laid paper, without or with indistinct watermark. Lightly wormed, lower right corner torn and repaired with loss of some words in the last two lines, browned, lightly soiled, evidence of glue on verso.
