British papers and correspondence with local agents on the international slave trade, including missives exchanged between Mr. Doria, Mr. C. Wood, and Sir G. Clerk on the continued importation of slaves by the Sheikh of Bandar Lengeh, discussing steps of "signal reprehension" (p. 85) against such conduct, and further intelligence forwarded by Captain Jones from Bushire relative to the trade of slaves throughout the Arabian Gulf.

Bernstein hatte 1970 anlässlich von Beethovens 200. Geburtstag ein 90-minütiges Programm mit dem Titel "Beethoven's Birthday: A Celebration in Vienna with Leonard Bernstein" (Regie: Humphrey Burton) in und um Wien drehen lassen.

Fine, rare collection of British equestrian sports in India, mostly showing the 1922 Calcutta Races. Annotated to rear: "The Indian Grand National: 1st Hurdle", "Mr Ivan Jones 'China Egg'", "The Canal Hurdle Plate (Finish)", etc. Also shows the spectators at a Polo match, portraits of Anglo-Arabian thoroughbreds, etc.

Steeplechase racing was popular in British India both among planters and cavalry regiments. The first Indian Grand National was run at Tollygunge as early as 1895.

Browning wrote this letter some years after his resounding success with the verse novel "The Ring and the Book" (1868/69).

Includes a small collector's note. With an embossed coat of arms and traces of old mounting on the verso and partly to the margins.

To Dr R. L. Worrall, in German, thanking him for his interesting letter, from which he has learned much, and answering some of the points raised: "I know that my comments on Marxism are no evidence either of a thorough knowledge or a correct understanding of the writings of Marx and Engels. I have learnt since - very much to my satisfaction - that both in no way denied the influence of ideas and superego-structures. That invalidates the main contrast between Marxism and psycho-analysis which I had believed to exist. As to the 'dialectic', I am no clearer, even after your letter. / For the evidence of the hypothesis of the human primal horde I must refer you to my sources, Darwin and Atkinson. I have no other arguments than theirs. Naturally I accepted from psycho-analytical experience and what it would have led one to expect"; adding that "I do not quite grasp the bearing of your question about the nature of Id. As far as I understand it I should answer in the affirmative" (translation by Ernest Jones).

Worrall had written to Freud querying his statement in "New Introductory Lectures" that Marxism attributes social change solely to economic forces, whereas he believed Marx and Engels took full account of social history and psychological factors; he also raised the subject of Hegel's Absolute Ideal, and enquired whether Freud's concept of an "old man of the tribe" relationship in prehistory, as giving rise to the Oedipus Complex, derived from Atkinson's interpretation of Darwin - and specifically if the mental qualities characteristic of the Id are of prehuman rather than of human origin (see the copy of Worrall's letter to Ernest Jones, included along with Jones's translation; also included is correspondence between Worrall and K. R. Eissler of the Sigmund Freud Archives, New York). When he wrote this letter, Freud was already suffering from the cancer that was to kill him: he tells Worrall that his letter "deserve[s] a comprehensive answer" but explains that "to do that by hand would be too great an effort for my eighty-one years" and that "a personal discussion would be a pleasure for me". Six months later, Austria was absorbed into the German Reich, and three months after that Freud escaped to England, where he was to die in September 1939.

Richardson, John. A dictionary, Persian, Arabic, and English. To which is prefixed a dissertation …Oxford, 1777-1780.

First edition of the first Persian-Arabic-English dictionary, edited by the orientalist Sir John Richardson (1740/41-1795). The first volume includes a dissertation on the languages, literature and manners of Eastern nations. ''An excellent work. As the first vol. or Persian, Arabic and English part was published separately, many more copies were sold than of the second or English, Persian, and Arabic. A few broken sets of the first volume being left, the booksellers were led to reprint several deficient sheets, and so with the copies left on hand of the second vol. they made up some perfect sets. But these are easily known from the original'' (Clarke), as they are printed in London in 1800.

"On 12 November 1767 [Richardson] was proposed for the Society of Antiquaries of London as of Furnival's Inn. In London he pursued both the law and the study of Arabic and Persian. In his oriental interests Richardson was much influenced by another young man, William Jones, who was already coming to be regarded as a prodigy of learning in Asian languages. With the growth of British territorial power in India the potential market for a Persian dictionary had aroused the interest of London publishers and by 1770 Jones and Richardson were working on a new version of Franciscus Meninski's 'Thesaurus linguarum orientalium', first published in 1680-87. Progress was very slow, and Jones withdrew to concentrate on his legal career, leaving the field to Richardson. Thanks to his 'ingenuity and perseverance' (memorial of A. Hamilton and G. Nicol to East India Company, 6 Feb 1776, BL OIOC, E/1/60, no. 26), an abridged version of the original project eventually appeared in two volumes in 1777 and 1780 as A Dictionary, Persian, Arabic and English. Fundamentally revised by others, notably by Charles Wilkins in 1806 and 1810, the dictionary was to have a long life, but although the company took 150 sets, there were few other subscribers and Richardson got little reward for the huge effort he had expended on it" (Marshall).

Bindings rubbed and worn, inner hinges partly split, endpapers renewed. Some staining and marginal repairs to interior; larger tears to 5 leaves, staining to both titles, ownership inscriptions partly inked out; both titles showing central repaired clipping as well as marginal strengthening and collector's stamp. A large part of both volumes shows worming to gutter; a few leaves with repairs.

Assemani, Simone. Saggio sull'origine, culto, letteratura, e costumi degli Arabi.Padua, 1787.

An account of the religion, literature, and manners of the Arabs before the Prophet. While largely compiled from European sources, Pococke, George Sale, Sir William Jones, and D'Herbelot in particular, the book includes extensive quotations in Arabic as well as details on Mecca, the Kaaba, and Muhammad. Assemani (1752-1821), a great-nephew of Joseph Assemani, the cataloguer of the oriental manuscripts in the Vatican library, is best known for his catalogue of the manuscripts and Cufic coins in the Naniana in Venice (cf. Fück 125).

Corner of lower free endpaper torn away, occasional light browning, wrappers a little frayed at the spine. Otherwise a good, wide-margined copy, untrimmed as issued.

W. H. Stiles, Enkel von Joseph Clay, war von 1845 bis 1849 als amerikanischer Gesandter in Wien, später als Abgeordneter des Kongresses in Georgia und während des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs als Colonel der Konföderierten tätig.

Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den "Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums.

[Ottoman military manual - firearms]. Ta'limat al-Madafi' - al-Shishanah.Cairo, early May 1864 CE = awa'il Du'l-Hijja 1280 H.

Fourth volume only of the Ottoman military manual "Ta'limat al-'Askariya al-Mustajadda" ("Instructions for the New Model Army"), discussing firearms, guns and artillery in the Ottoman army. Translated from Turkish into Arabic by Captain Hasan Effendi Muzahhar with the assistance of his fellow officer Mohammed Effendi 'Abi'l Hasan. The title ("Gun Instructions - The Shishana") denotes an old Ottoman lock rifle produced mostly in Syria.

Binding severely rubbed and bumped; spine chipped; remains of old lending label on upper cover. Handwritten English note on flyleaf: "found in a tent at Tel-el-Kebir / 14 September 1882 / T. J. Jones". In the Battle of Tel El Kebir (13 Sept. 1882), fought near the Suez Canal, the British military defeated the Egyptian army led by Ahmed Urabi following an insurrection of Egyptian soldiers during the Anglo-Egyptian War.

We returned from our long travel a few weeks ago and have since been staying with my brother in law at Hampstead. But we shall soon be nearer to you & to our friends in the West. We have bought No. 45 Kensington Park Gardens, and intend to get into it about November [...]".

In 1875, Arnold resigned his editorship of "The Echo" and journeyed through the Middle East with his wife, then published an account of this thousand-mile journey unter the title "Through Persia by Caravan" (1877).

The first complete New Testament printed by the BFBS entirely in Syriac, edited by Samuel Lee. "The editor based his text upon Schaaf's edition; but he collated an ancient Syriac MS. belonging to Adam Clarke, a MS. from the Lebanon, dated 1523, now at Cambridge, and a third MS. (without vowel-points) brought by Claudius Buchanan from Travancore, as well as the Commentaries of Ephrem Syrus, and also made some use of the collations of R. Jones. The printing of this edition was completed in 1816" (Darlow/M.). This copy has the "extensive obliterations [...] in the section headings, made by means of a stamp and violet ink", which were "made by order of the BFBS Committee, on the ground that the headings contravened the rules of the Society" (ibid.).

Binding rubbed and bumped; occasional marginal scribblings in red crayon (more extensive on p. 5). Traces of worming in the upper margin of the final two leaves overpasted with brown paper. In all a good copy of a rarely seen edition.

Davis, Miles, Jazz musician (1926-1991). Autograph signature ("Miles") on the reverse of the cover of: Miles Davis. …Dortmund, Cologne, The Hague and other places, 1976-1981.

The studio album recorded in New York in 1962/63 was the fourth and final collaboration between Miles Davis and Gil Evans; it was published by Columbia Records in 1964 (cat. no. CL 2106 and CS 8906). After nearly four months of recording sessions (from 27 July to 6 November 1962) had yielded no more than 20 minutes' worth of publishable music, enough for one side but not an entire album, the producer Teo Macero decided to include a 1963 recording by the Miles Davis Quintet ("Summer Night") so that he might release the LP padded out to roughly 30 minutes - a move that strongly upset Davis, who objected to releasing a project that he considered unfinished. The rift would last for almost two years, when the two rejoined for work on "Miles Smiles" - an album running to a little over 40 minutes and recorded in October 1966 in no more than two days.

Davis' signature is on the reverse; on the front are the signatures of Gil Evans, George Coleman, Steve Lacy, Elvin Jones, Bobby Rosengarden, Jimmy Knepper, Jerome Richardson, and Ron Carter. On the inner sleeve the collector has noted when and where he acquired the various signatures. The cover is in remarkably good condition, especially considering that the collector evidently took it along to eight (or nine) concerts (Miles Davis' signature is undated).
